DAY BY DAY ITINERARY
DAY 1: Overnight Flight
Depart for Europe.
DAY 2: Sorrento
Arrive in Rome and meet your Travel & Company Tour Manager before transferring to Sorrento, a town where Italians go to escape the bustle of the city and be within striking distance of many of Campania's top sights. Join your fellow travelers and relax at our welcome reception and dinner. (D)
DAY 3: Sorrento
Admire not just Sorrento's natural beauty—most notably its steep cliffs cascading into the azure ocean—but also its Cathedral, Piazza Tasso and 13th century architecture on the morning's guided sightseeing tour. This afternoon and evening, you are free to relax and smell the lemons growing all around the district. (B)
DAY 4: Sorrento
Lemons make more than just lemonade, as you know if you've ever tasted Limoncello. But the liqueur isn't the region's only export. During an informal talk and tasting this morning, indulge in regional delicacies: mozzarella, olive oil, and Maccheroni pasta as well as Limoncello and Fiano wine. Samplings follow during lunch in a local Trattoria. But it's not all food and wine here. This afternoon an expert will introduce the centuries-old Intarsia, Sorrento's vital traditional craft, in a visit to the museum and workshop devoted to this form of inlaid woodworking. (B,L)
DAY 5: Sorrento
While today is free to relax, don't miss the optional excursion to fascinating Pompeii. Buried in ash spewed by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, the burgeoning commercial center and its markets, shops and homes were frozen in time and are riddled with detail that would have otherwise been washed away by the millennia. The Archaeological Museum in Naples augments Pompeii's offerings—the buried city's most spectacular finds are preserved and on display at the museum. There's also an entire floor filled with sculpture and Egyptian art. (B)
DAY 6: Sorrento
When in Campania, Capri is a must. Should you choose to spend this free day on the optional excursion, you'll board a hydrofoil for the boat trip across the Gulf of Naples. While the wide beaches may shift your focus away from sightseeing, it's a day well-spent. If the beach is not your priority, take the funicular up to town and explore the trails that lead along the cliff tops or peruse the ritzy shops frequented by Capri's glamorous vacationers. Consider a ride to the summit of Mount Solaro for panoramic views over the Gulf of Naples, or see Emperor Tiberius's retirement home from the first century—waterfront, of course. (B)
DAY 7: Sorrento
Today's optional full-day excursion explores the Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Twisting along the mountainside, the drive hugs the coastline and embraces the striking scenery, including stops at the artists" enclave Positano and the town of Amalfi. Positano strikes an air of sophistication with expensive villas yet cherishes its roots with an intact fishing fleet. The nearby town of Amalfi is noted for the white houses clinging to its steep cliffsides, its impressive cathedral and its meandering avenues. Otherwise, today is free to spend as you wish. (B)
DAY 8: Sorrento
Enjoy a free day to stroll the citrus groves of Sorrento or catch some last rays of Mediterranean sun before your farewell dinner tonight. (B,D)
DAY 9: Departure
Depart for the USA. (B)
