DAY BY DAY ITINERARY
DAY 1: Lima
Depart from the USA. Arrive in the capital of Peru, meet your tour manager and check in to your hotel.
DAY 2: Lima
Begin your South American exploration today with a guided sightseeing tour of Lima that includes the Plaza de Armas, Plaza San Martin, the Gold Museum and Archaeological Museum—which houses the largest collection of artifacts from the pre-Hispanic cultures of Peru. In the afternoon visit the Church of San Francisco, famous for its catacombs and library, and the Convent of Santo Domingo. (B,D)
DAY 3: Ollantaytambo
Depart for a morning flight to Cuzco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire. Then journey to the town of Pisac and visit the famous Indian Market. Be sure to pick up some native textiles and goods as souvenirs for friends back home. After lunch, continue to the small town of Ollantaytambo and the Ollantay fortress. Strategically placed on a hilltop overlooking the valley below, the fortress and town are one of the last remaining examples of pre-Columbian architectural planning. (B,L,D)
DAY 4: Aguas Calientes
Board the Vistadome train this morning for a scenic ride to Aguas Calientes where you'll begin your journey to the magnificent temple ruins of Machu Picchu. A guided tour will introduce you to the mystery and legends that shroud this sacred site. It is hard to believe that such a massive site was unknown to the world, other than the local residents, until it was visited by the American historian Hiram Bingham in 1911. Return to Aguas Calientes this evening. (B)
DAY 5: Cuzco
This morning is free for you to return to Machu Picchu for further exploration of the ruins. Be sure to stop at the Intihuatana, a rock used by the tribal priests and the only surviving example in the world today. This afternoon you will travel back to Cuzco. (B,D)
DAY 6: Cuzco
This morning, a sightseeing tour shows you Cuzco's Cathedral, the ancient temple of Korikancha and the fortress of Sacsayhuamán. This evening enjoy an authentic Peruvian meal and show at the Restaurant Tunupa. (B,D)
DAY 7: Puno
Today you'll be traveling to what feels like the top of the world! Board the world's highest train to Juliaca, then continue by bus to Puno, the famed folklore capital of Peru. (B,L,D)
DAY 8: Puno
Set off across Lake Titicaca by boat this morning, making stops at Uros and Taquile, small floating islands made of packed totota reeds. Visit with the local tribes that live on these remarkable islands. Return to Puno for dinner and a night's rest. (B,D)
DAY 9: Overnight Flight
Rise early for a visit to the ancient Chullpa Tombs of Sillustani. This pre-Incan burial ground is perhaps the best preserved example of how the Aymara people buried their dead in tall tower-like stuctures—chullpas. Continue to Juliaca to board your flight to Lima. After a special farewell dinner, transfer to the airport and depart for the USA. (B,L,D)
DAY 10: Departure
